ANGEL: BRONX
Angel, 60, had completed our ElderCare program before, but after four months of sobriety, he felt like he could test the waters and prove to himself that he could handle one drink.
“It was such a mistake,” Angel recalls, as one drink led to another. “It wasn’t long until I was back to drinking every day.”
He knew that returning to Odyssey House would help him brush up on the skills he had forgotten. “Relapsing was the best thing that could have happened to me because now I understand I have to stay focused on my recovery every day.”
Since his return, Angel has become a part of the community by taking on responsibilities within the program and reconnecting with his peers. He plans to stay in the program until he feels confident in his recovery, then resume his position at his family’s restaurant. “I’m so grateful to Odyssey House for all the help they have given me.”
ALONZO: HARLEM
I’m ready to move on, and get my family back. I’m too old for this. Enough is enough.
